The annual Capital City Cross Country Invitational

St. Michael’s sophomore Raylee Hunt handily won the girls 5-killometer race and the girls team title went to Santa Fe Indian School at the annual Capital City Cross Country Invitational hosted by Santa Fe High and run over the Municipal Regional Complex.
Hunt, the state cross country champion, time 19:40 and was the only girl under 20 minutes, with Santa Fe Prep sophomore Nya Griego second in 20:26, and the Griffins with not a senior in the lineup, placed second with 77 points.
The boys race went to Pedro Tafoya of Laguna-Acuoma in the time of 17:31, and it also claimed the team title with 59 points, edging Los Lunas by two points.  Third was St. Michael’s with 90 points, the Braves boys and Santa Fe High scored 112 each and Santa Fe Prep came in ninth.
But the Indian School girls came away with a whooping 54 points, with sophomore Destiny Chino finishing third in 21:20.17, senior Alexis Aguno fifth in 21.25, senior Destiny Marquez 11th in 21:47, and Wanda Yepa placing 17th and clockimg 22.35. That wasn’t all for the Braves of head coach Joe Calabazza as it added 18th, 19th and 20th finishers, and 22nd was Daniniel Smith.
Academy for Technology and The Classics scored 185 for seventh place and ninth was the Demonettes with 221. There were nine schools in the field and 65 harriers.
The boys field had six schools and 68 runners. Fifth and six places went to the Horsemen’s sophomore Landen Sandoval and freshman Jaden Perea, respectively, with Sandoval timed in 18:04 and Perea right behind in 18:06 in the 68-runner field.
Eigth place sent to Indian School’s Jeremiah Chavez in 18:09, and 13th was his teammate Justin Mirabal in 18:40. In 15th was Daniel Busemeyer of the Demons in 18.57, Indian School’s Joseph Armijo took 19th in 19:01, and Valom Wittenberg of Santa Fe High turned in a 19.05 to finish 21st.
The junior varsity girls had the winner with Nalani Padilla of Indian School racing 23.59, and the runner-up was Lady Horsemen freshman Rayna Baros in 24.09 and a close finish in the field of 25.
In the boys JV run, Xavier Bolton of Indian School raced 20.24 and right behind him was St. Michael’s sophomore Marcus Crockett in 20.08 in the field of 55.
 
The girls middle school event was won by Whitney Schilling of ATCAC and she  clocked 15.09 in the shorter race, with Indian School’s Johanna Leno second in 15.30 in the field of 42.
 
In the boys middle school run, the field totaled 59 and the young Braves had the top two spots behind victorious Kale Lovato’s 10.39 and runner-up Dontrey Callado timed 11.07.
