St. Michael’s soccer teams came away Thursday with a split against District 2-1A-3A rival Robertson.
In the boys match at St. Michael’s at the Christian Brothers Athletic Complex, the Horsemen improved to 12-3 overall and 1-1 in district by shutting down Robertson, 2-0, In and out of the rain, the weather conditions didn’t slow down Allan Rosales and Trevor Erickson as they scored a goal each, the 24th for Erickson.
Erickson tallied his 24th goal in the 20th minute of the first half and the team didn’t collect the insurance goal until Rosales’ breakaway goal with five minutes remaining. Both he and Erickson also had an assist each, and goaltender Santiago Sandoval posted the shutout while making six saves. The Horsemen take a break now and doesn’t play until Oct. 13 at East Mountain.
In the girls match, it was a tight tussle on a muddy field, with Robertson on its home field scoring on a late penalty shot to claim the victory. The Cardinals had only three shots and tallied on two of them. St. Michael’s, now 10-4 overall and 3-1 in district, the Horsemen were down 1-0 after the first half when senior Grace Sandoval knotted the score in the second half to break the 1-1 tie.
St. Michael’s came away with a dozen shots, but Robertson advanced to 12-1 overall and 2-1 in district. It now plays a non-district match Saturday at Monte del Sol.
In another district girls match played at Taos, it was Los Alamos haven’t no problem coming away with a 7-1 win behind five goals scored by Tara McDonald in the first half, and she added a pair of assists. Then there was Laila Carter scoring the other two goals and contributing a whooping four assists.
The Hilltoppers evened their overall mark at 7-7, became 2-0 in the district, and next plays visiting Aztec Saturday in non-district play. The Tigers became 4-9-1 overall and 1-1 in district, and heads to Moriarty Tuesday.
In volleyball, Robertson excelled on the road by sweeping Santa Fe Prep, 3-0, at the Griffins’ court in District 2-3A and upping its overall record to 11-3 and going 2-0 in district. On Tuesday, the Cardinals get a visit from neighbor West Las Vegas, while Prep travels up to Raton for a district match Saturday. The scores were 25-10, 25-19, 25-15.
The Griffins picked up three kills apiece from Nicole Gonzales and Dahlia Reyes Newell, and Newell had two blocks. Then there was freshman setter Tori Stumbo serving three aces and giving out five assists.
Pojoaque Valley also carried off a volleyball triumph by topping host Moriarty, 25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 25-10 in District 2-4A. It was the Elkettes winning their sixth match in their last seven attempts and moving to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in district, and they now get a visit from Espanola Valley on Oct. 13.
Pojoaque gained 30 digs, 12 kills and two aces from Adrianna Rodriguez, while teammate Sonya Quintana added 17 kills and a quartet of blocks to go with a pair of aces, and Jocelyn Nunez came up with 36 assists and 13 digs.
