MONTE DEL SOL BOYS BASKETBALLMONTE DEL SOL BOYS BASKETBALL

By Arnie Leshin
It’s been a busy schedule for an early start, but the Monte del Sol boys basketball team is enjoying it.
Under head coach Ralph Casaus, it has played three games and haven’t put a blemish on its record, opening with a 53-45 triumph up at Espanola McCurdy, then came back-to-back games with a 57-41 win over East Mountain in Sandia Park followed by a 83-52 rout over Santa Fe Waldorf at Christain Life in Santa Fe.
So after those three starts, the Dragons now move along with a 5:30 test at 2-0Mora tonight, and on Saturday Monte del Sol concludes the weekend with a 12:30afternoon contest at Dulce. Busy, busy, busy it is for these Dragons, for they will take the court on Dec. 15, 16, 17. Three days later, it visits Pojoaque Valley, and five days later it’s Christmas 2022.
Whew, that’s quite a lot of high school ball to share with the holidays, but so far Casaus isn’t complaining.
“We’re playing good ball,” he said. “As usual, Kevin is his usual athletic self with scoring, rebounding, blocking shots, and leadership.”
A senior, Kevin is the 6-foot-4 Enriquez in his fourth year with the varsity. He’s averaging 23.3 points per game, bringing down 8.3 boards a game, and his assists are at 4.3 and about the same as steals.
The other senior of this one-two punch is a smaller version, 5-2 Xaniro Zubia, and he’s at 24.3 scoring per start, and 3.7 in assists. For rebounds, he’ll first have to grow some more, but he is shooting at a 48 percent range.
Then there’s 8th-grader Bryan Enriquez, Kevin’s younger brother. He’s young but a starter who runs the floor well, can toss up shots, can drive the lane, swipe the ball, and hand out assists.
The Dragons have scored 193 points so far and have yielded 140.
