A victorious Tuesday for St. Michael’s

By Arnie Leshin
It was a two-for-two sweep for St. Michael’s over Santa Fe Indian School in District 2-3A Tuesday basketball.

While the girls got past the Braves, 25-23 at Pueblo Pavilion, the boys turned back the visiting Braves, 61-46.

The results gained ground for both in district play, the girls winning their district opener and advancing to 12-6 overall, and Indian School falling to 15-5 overall and 1-2 in district.

It was a sloppy game, with the Lady Horsemen committing 24 turnovers and doing not much better from the field with only seven of 33 baskets, and SFIS didn’t do much better with 22 turnovers and making only seven of 38 shots.

At one point, the visitors missed 11 straight tries and turned the ball over five times during that stretch. But their defense did force the Braves into 3-of-14 shooting and six turnovers to keep the contest close.
Said Lady Horsemen head coach Sonya Ruiz: “Our guard, they love to put pressure on the ball, and it’s hard to tell them not to. We’ve talked about pressure on the ball, but don’t reach.”
Down 21-17, St. Michael’s got a bucket from senior point guard Lauryn Pecos with 2:56remaining, then senior forward Jacqueline Gorman tossed in a short jumper shortly after to knot the score at 21-all. Gorman then followed with a pair of free throws at 56.7 for the 23-21 lead her team maintained.
On Friday, the Lady Horsemen are home to defending state champion Robertson for the district lead.
St. Michael’s boys upped their overall mark to 14-4 and 2-0 in district as Indian School fell to 12-7 and winless in three district starts.
The Horsemen defense increased their first half lead of 22-19 by holding the home team to only 11 third-quarter points and extended the margin to 42-30 after three quarters.
St. Michael’s senior Adam Montoya led all scorers with 22 points.
On Thursday, the Horsemen get a visit from reigning state champion Robertson, while SFIS plays district for Raton on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals on the road had a close call before turning back district rival West Las Vegas, 43-36, and is now 16-2 overall and 3-0 in district. The Dons are 11-8 and 2-1 and play at Santa Fe Prep Saturday.
At the Genoveva Chavez Community Center, it was a 54-33 win for the Academy of Technology and The Classics over Monte del Sol.
In other girls play, it was another useless start for winless Monte del Sol as a 46-10 trouncing from Academy for Technology and The Classics was its 15th in a row and initial district shellacking, while ATATC rose to 10-5 and 2-1.
The combined Santa Fe Prep-Waldorf team dropped a close one, 35-34, at Albuquerque Legacy Academy, and next plays visiting Albuquerque Cottonwood Thursday.
