Tough task for first place Santa Fe High boys

By Arnie Leshin
The First place Santa Fe High boys basketball team had a struggle against visiting, surprising Albuquerque Manzano on Wednesday nightin District 5-5A before turning in a 53-50 triumph.

Also on Wednesday night in 5-5A, Capital dropped a 60-43 contest at second-place Los Lunas, 60-43, to drop to 12-6 and 1-2. For the Tigers, it’s 15-4 and 2-1.

As for the Demons, they had to work some in upping their district mark to 3-0 and overall record to 12-7. The Monarchs came to play despite falling to 7-12 and 1-2.

Leading the scoring for SFHS was 6-foot-2 junior Lukas Turner with 15 points and fellow 6-1 senior Santiago Montoya added a dozen. It was tight, Santa Fe High was up 15-14 after a quarter, it was 26-26 at the intermission, the Demons edged ahead 40-37 after three and the fourth quarter remained close at 13 points each.

On Saturday the Demons are home to the Jaguars.

Capital trailed from the start against Los Lunas, fell behind 34-24 at halftime, and were then outscored 11-6 in the third quarter. The Jags picked up a team-high from 5-9 senior Izaya Sanchez-Velencia, and 5-6 senior teammate Isaac Ortega contributed 10.

In girls basketball, it was an easy win for St. Michael’s, 25-11 over non-district opponent Pojoaque Valley up at the Ben Lujan court as the Lady Horsemen brought their overall record to 13-6 and dropped the Elkettes to 8-12.

But St. Michael’s has a tough task at home Friday when reigning state 3A champion Robertson visits. The transfer portal Cardinals are 18-1 and shellacked the Lady Horsemen, 62-33, in a previous neutral court meeting.

Versus Pojoaque, St. Michael’s led only 9-6 at the half and increased it to 18-11 after three while then holding the Elkettes scoreless in the final quarter.

Senior point guard Lauryn Pecos led the visitors with eight points and senior forward Madison Mossman brought down 10 rebounds.
