It’s tough going this time for defending state champion Robertson

By Arnie Leshin
District 2-3A boy’s basketball is really shaping up for the stretch run.

This comes after reigning state champion Robertson comes after the Cardinals were clobbered 60-30 on Jan. 26 at St. Michael’s, then came a 69-55 setback for the Cards at non-district Albuquerque Bosque School.

Now it was Santa Fe Prep giving quite a battle to visiting Robertson before going down 69-67 Friday night. Now the Cards are 18-4 overall and 5-1 in district, and a half-game behind the first place Horsemen, who are 17-4 overall.

It made the Cards less inviable and they might have a tough test at Santa Fe Indian School Wednesday that is followed by no doubt another tough task versus visiting St. Michael’s, but of course it would also be avenge cooking for the home side.

Meanwhile, the Griffens are all even overall at 9-9 and 3-3 in districts. They won three in a row before losing at Indian School and then against Robertson. Prep had lost its first three starts and then won 9 of its next dozen before now.

For St. Michael’s it was a Friday sweep, with the boys rolling past Raton, 87-40, on the road, and its girls shellacked the visiting Tigers, 57-22.

Indian School did the same, winning a tough boy’s game at West Las Vegas, 55-53, to up its overall record to 15-7 and 3-3 in district, while the Braves’ girls turned away the visiting Dons, 40-31.

The Lady Horsemen, (15-7, 3-1) picked up a team-high dozen points from senior Madison Mossman while senior Carmen Pacheco contributed 10.

As for the Horsemen boys, it was the team best of 21 points from seniors Adam Montoya, and fellow seniors Sabiana Rios tossed in 19 and Taylor Lozarda 12.

The Capital girls also had a winner in taking to the road to nip district foe Rio Grande, 45-42, and advance to 6-16 overall and a credible 4-2 in district.

Senior Layla Cintron had the team-high 10 points for the Jaguars, seven coming in the fourth quarter. Senior teammate Nichole Salazar added nine.

In another girl’s game, Texico dominated Pecos, 54-32, in District 2-2A.
