St. Michael’s boys basketball team hopes to continue its red-hot regular season

By Arnie Leshin

St. Michael’s boys basketball team won its 17th consecutive game and clinched the District 2-3A championship via Saturday’s 54-47 win over visiting Santa Fe Indian School.

The result put the Horsemen at 22-4 overall and a perfect 10-0 in district, and will host the district tournament title game on Feb. 25. The Braves (17-9, 5-5) finished third in district.

Senior and leading scorer Adam Montoya paved the way with 15 points, sophomore Sabiani added 13 and senior Josh Sanchez tallied nine.

It was a rather close contest as Indian School led 11-6 after the first quarter, and increased it to 26-13 while the Horsemen cut the deficit to 31-25 at the half, tied it at 36-all heading into the fourth quarter, and a pair of free throws by senior Tavon Lozada with 4:53 remaining gained the lead it never relinquished.

At Santa Fe Prep in 2-3A, the Griffins got past Raton, 59-53, to clinch the fifth seed in district at 11-13 overall and 3-7 in district.

Juniors Mitch Grover led Prep with 19 points and Van Anderson contributed 15.

The Griffins had a 14-10 advantage after the opening quarter, but the Tigers trimmed the gap to within 33-30 at the intermission, but the home team was ahead 42-37 after three quarters to seal the victory.
