St. Michael’s winning streak soared to 16

By Arnie Leshin
With some time off due to the snow and chili winds, St. Michael’s boys basketball team took a while getting started before getting past visiting West Las Vegas, 59-48, in District 2-3A play Thursday night.

This result also moved the Horsemen to their 16th straight win, at 21-4 overall, and a perfect 9-0 in district with a home contest versus Santa Fe Indian School Saturday.

The Dons (13-11, 4-5) can finish in a third-place district deadlock with the Braves if they can defeat second place Robertson Saturday.

Seniors Adam Montoya and Josh Sanchez led St. Michael’s with 17 points each.

At Santa Fe Prep in 2-3A, Indian School upped its overall record to 17-8 and 5-4 in district by getting past the Griffins, 68-64, behind senior wing Owen Pecos’ 18 points and 13 from junior Jamaal Alonso.

For Prep, senior Morgan Field had the game-high 22 points and teammates Mitch Grover and Kiran Belyeu tallied 14 each.

On Saturday, the Braves are home to St. Michael’s frontrunners and Prep (10-13, 2-7) and completes the regular season versus visiting Raton.
