The select seven

By Arnie Leshin
Seven Division I college basketball schools have landed both their men and women in the top 25 of the latest polls.

And with that, on top of the heap sits Indiana. Second would be UCLA, third UConn, fourth Gonzaga, fifth Texas, sixth Arizona, and seventh Iowa State.

To boil it down, I first went over who stood where in both polls. Among the men, UCLA (20-4) was fourth, Texas (20-5) sixth, Arizona (20-4) ninth, Gonzaga (21-5) 13th, Indiana (18-7) 14th, Iowa State (16-8) 19th, and UConn (19-7) 20th.

The women listed Indiana (23-1) second, UConn (22-4) sixth, UCLA (10-6) 16th, Texas (20-6) 17th, Arizona (19-6) 18th, Gonzaga (23-3) 20th, and Iowa State (15-7) seventh.

Totaling up the combined records, it was Gonzaga at 44-8, Indiana at 41-8, UConn at 41-11, UCLA at 40-10, Texas at 40-11, Arizona at 39-10, and Iowa State at 31-15.

Adding up the combined places, it comes out to — with men first — Indiana (14-2) at 16, UCLA (4-16) at 20, Texas (6-17) at 23, Arizona (9-18) at 24, UConn (20-6) at 26, Gonzaga) (13-20) at 33, and Iowa State (19-22) at 41.

And that puts the Hoosiers at the head of the pack. Second would be the Bruins, third Texas, fourth Arizona, fifth UConn, sixth Gonzaga, and seventh Iowa State.

What strengthen Indiana was its high spot among the women. Pluses for UCLA, Texas and Arizona with fourth, sixth and ninth respectively among the men. What hurt the Huskies was their men fading from the front to the back.

Fun to look this over each week and give a boost to both the men’s and women’s teams that added up to seven out of the top 25 this time around.

Now if South Carolina’s undefeated, No. 1 defending women’s champion had a better men’s team than this one below .500, the Gamecocks could be up there in both polls.
