By Arnie Leshin
Capital’s volleyball team followed up Tuesday’s sweep at Navajo Prep by getting past visiting Belen, 25-15, 25-20, 25-10, in non-district play Friday.

Now 2-0, the Jaguars provided a balanced attack at the net as Madelaine Perillo came up with eight blocks and nine kills, and Sofia Cintron added four blocks and six kills.

The rest of the offense came from seniors Layla Toya and Leslie Gutierrez-Chavez, with Toya having 22 assists and five aces and Gutierrez-Chavez with seven kills. Defensively, Jadyn Padilla came away with 11 digs and Violet Gonzalez added 10.

In another match, Pojoaque Valley swept past visiting Robertson, 3-0, to begin its season. Giselle Munoz had a team-high dozen kills to go with seven digs, a block, and an ace. Teammate Joslyn Nunez dished out 23 assists and turned in 13 digs.

Next stop for the Elks is the Sept. 8 Moriarty tournament, while 0-2 Robertson is home to Albuquerque Bosque School Wednesday in its home opener.

In girls soccer, Bosque School began its round robin tournament with a tight 4-3 win over visiting Santa Fe Prep. It was the second setback in three starts for the Griffins and the opener for the Bobcats.

Prep, which received a hat trick from Marley Belyeu, next plays Albuquerque Highland and Socorro Saturday to complete the round robin.
