COLLEGE BASKETBALL, FOOTBALL RANKINGS

By Arnie Leshin

North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas are the only colleges in both the Associated Press top 25 rankings in basketball and football.

While the Tarheels are ranked 10th in football, the Volunteers are 17th, and the Longhorns eighth.

In women’s hoops, North Carolina is at No. 16, and its men at No. 19. In men’s hoops, Tennessee is ninth, and 11th on the women’s list. As for Texas, it is 13th on the women’s basketball list and 18th on that of the men.

Checking off the remaining schools who check in on both men’s and women’s basketball, among the men are Creighton (8) and among the women (22); Baylor 20th among the men and 19 among the women; Illinois at 25th in men’s hoops and 23rd among the men.

Not usual, but here in basketball it is Southern California 21st among the men and the same among the women.

University of Connecticut is high in both, No. 2 among the women in basketball, and No.  6 among the men in basketball where it is the reigning  national champion. Louisiana State is defending women’s basketball champion and top-ranked on the charts.

On top of the heap in football is undefeated Georgia at 7-0 and with 1541 points. Next comes 7-0 Michigan at No. 2 with 1492 points. Third is 6-0 Ohio State with 1393 points. In fourth is Florida State at 6-0 and with 1388 points, and next comes 6-0 Washington with 1355 points, and only 38 points separate Ohio State, FSU, and the Huskies.

Sixth and seventh respectively on the turf chart is 6-0 Oklahoma and 6-0 Penn State, and the remaining school with an unblemished mark is No. 22 Air Force. Thus, it’s nine undefeated there. There are two schools on the list with two defeats, and they are LSU (5-2) and UCLA (4-2).

In men’s basketball, defending champion Kansas is ahead of the pack with 1548 points, then comes Duke (1466), Purdue (1436), Michigan State (1346), and fifth-ranked Marquette with 1283. Next comes UConn with 1243 points and initial No. 6 rankings.

To women’s basketball we go, with LSU owning 899 points, UConn 855, Iowa 780, UCLA 757, and fifth-ranked Utah with 742.

In women’s hoops voted upon by USA Today, the top three remain the same — LSU, UConn, Iowa — then comes South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Utah, UCLA, Indiana, and No. 10 Notre Dame. Here, LSU has 797 points, UConn 727, and Iowa 713.

In basketball you’ve got Texas 13th among the women and 18th among the men.
