GIRLS DISTRICT SOCCER ST. MICHAEL’S VERSUS SANTA FE PREP

By Arnie Leshin

It took a go-ahead second goal by sophomore forward Marley Belyeu at the 74th minute mark to bring Santa Fe Prep a 4-3 win over St. Michael’s and first place in the 2-3A girls soccer match in late afternoon at the St. John’s College pitch Tuesday.

It was a back-and-fourth tussle contested at Sun Mountain Field. At the same field last season, the Lady Horsemen won twice, 3-0, 4-0, over the Griffins, but this time the improved Prep fell behind 1-0 on sophomore forward Sophia Miera’s initial tally, but Belyeu tied it at 1-1 after one half.

Prep then went up 2-1 on a second half goal from senior midfielder Lusa Hirsch-Arnett, but St. Michael’s senior midfielder Jada Lujan followed with the tying goal shortly after. After the tie-breaker from Belyeu, Miera hit the goal post for the second time in the match on a corner kick as the final seconds ticked away.

Freshman Alice Zang was in goal for Santa Fe Prep, sophomore Marisa Dominquez for the Lady Horsemen.

The result placed the Griffins at 7-7-1 overall and 3-0-1 in district and dropped the Lady Horsemen to 5-6-2 and 2-1. West Las Vegas is right in mix at 5-5-1 overall and 0-1-1, Robertson is 4-9 overall and 1-1 in district, but despite their lowly overall mark, the Cardinals remain in the district race.

Then there’s winless, scoreless Santa Fe Indian School 0-9-0 overall with no runs tallied and 80 allowed, a hapless campaign going nowhere but the field.

Prep still has district matches against visiting Robertson, at St. Michael’s, at Indian School, and home to WLV. The Lady Horsemen are home to the Cardinals, at the Braves, at Robertson, and home to the Griffins in the key regular-season district final.

As for the Cards, they are at St. Michael, at Prep, home to Indian School, home to the Lady Horsemen and at the Dons, who in turn play at Robertson, at the Braves, home to the Lady Horsemen, and with a visit from Santa Fe Prep in the next-to-last regular-season district clash.

To see that Robertson’s overall record included a huge amount of close games, it has scored 37 points and yielded 38. The Griffins are 47-40 in points, St. Michael’s 42-43, and West Las Vegas 20-24. Tough going for these teams.

Said St. Michael’s head coach Alfonso Camarena: “Missing those two corner kicks that hit the goal post really hurt, and we still have injury problems and are down to 11 players, but Prep did play well.”
