Dear Supporters, we’re sounding the alarm with critical updates after the closing of the 2025 New Mexico Legislature last Saturday. New Mexico Alliance for Life launched a statewide petition against Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s last-minute funding for a $10 million abortion center in northern New Mexico–slipped into HB 450 (page 242, see below). Stay tuned next week as NMAFL plans to release information on where the new “northern New Mexico” abortion center will be located.
Over 1,500 New Mexicans have signed the petition to STOP another $10 million taxpayer-funded abortion center. Add your name here today and please share with others!
Despite rigorous opposition from legislators across the state, the bill passed both chambers—every Democrat but Rep. Joseph Sanchez (D-Rio Arriba) voted yes—and now awaits the governor’s signature. This secretive move, despite 59% of New Mexicans opposing abortion expansion (Albuquerque Journal), demands action.
SIGN & SHARE THE PETITION NOW, TIME IS RUNNING OUT:
Tell Governor MLG: – I’m outraged by the $10 million abortion center hidden in HB 450 with no public input. New Mexico needs healthcare, housing, and education—not abortion expansion— with our tax dollars. I stand with the majority against this agenda. Sign and share here.
GOOD NEWS: Two of Three Bad Bills You Helped NMAFL Fight Die!
**SB 57**: PASSED THE HOUSE FLOOR ON PARTY LINE VOTE, HEADS TO GOVERNOR’S DESK. This bill, as admitted by the sponsor, Senate Majority Leader Peter Wirth, is aimed at shielding Dr. Eve Espey–a radical abortion activist earning a taxpayer funded salary of $530,388 annually at UNM. It ultimately will conceal Espey’s and every taxpayer funded abortion activity from public disclosure. This includes Espey’s taxpayer funded abortion expansion across the state, her plans to execute this through UNM Health Sciences Center and abortion allies were first exposed by NMAFL in November (read more here).
These plans were uncovered by NMAFL’s use of the state’s existing open records law, which SB 57 will now block. This includes any and all records that involve the practice of abortion and will even conceal any misuse of funds or potential illegal activity—like the shocking 2016 Congressional referrals against UNMHSC. NMAFL’s investigation into UNM HSC’s mishandling of fetal tissue and violating consent laws was uncovered by use of the state’s Inspection of Public Records Act, IPRA, amended by SB 57 to prohibit further investigations like this.
**SB 404**: DIED IN COMMITTEE: Eliminates mandatory reporting of induced abortions entirely, no state agency would collect or publish data on induced abortions, ending a decades-long practice of tracking–including the number of taxpayer-funded abortions in NM. Eliminates access to medical records by health care professionals, including electronic records pertaining to abortion and transgender procedures. This requires a multi-million dollar overhaul of the medical records system, as noted by Dem Senator Martin Hickey, a retired physician. With New Mexico now a hub for unregulated abortions up to birth (75% for out-of-state women), this secrecy could also hide injuries, deaths, and millions in Medicaid spending.
**SB 508**: DIED IN COMMITTEE: Pumps millions into expanding health facilities and mobile units including a $750k “community health center” in Bernalillo county, a $1.5 million “public health office” in Doña Ana county, and a $1 million “Student Health Center” at Eastern New Mexico University. These publicly funded facilities will be used to promote, if not perform elective abortion and transgender procedures.I
SENATE REPUBLICANS & NMAFL FIGHT BACK:
Senate Republicans, Leader Bill Sharer, Caucus Chair David Gallegos, Sen. Nicole Tobiassen, Sen. Gabriel Ramos, Sen. Candy Ezell and Sen. Pat Boone stood boldly for life and transparency Thursday morning at a press conference with New Mexico Alliance for Life, spotlighting Senate Bill 347, the Health Care Workers Conscience Protection Act. This vital legislation would shield brave doctors, nurses, and medical staff from being forced to participate in the tragedy of abortion or related services when their faith or conscience says no. By ensuring they face no retaliation or lose their job, SB 347 provides a complete, straight forward conscience protection for New Mexico’s medical professionals where federal protections leave gaps.
Yet, shamefully, pro-abortion Democrat leaders in the Senate refused to even schedule this bill for a hearing this session, adding to the strained and broken health care system in New Mexico.
Suzette Presti, an Albuquerque sonographer and spokesperson for the New Mexico Alliance for Life, joined lawmakers to call out this injustice. “Federal conscience laws fall short—riddled with weak enforcement and vague protections—leaving pro-life health workers vulnerable while ignoring their sacred duty to protect the unborn,” she declared.
Sen. Gabriel Ramos (R-Silver City), the bill’s lead sponsor, emphasized its urgency, saying it’s “very important” to safeguard individual rights and religious freedom. Meanwhile, Sen. David Gallegos (R-Eunice), champion of two stalled bills for safe haven baby boxes (SB 360 and SB 499), vowed to fight on, collaborating with Native American communities to ensure every precious life, including those surrendered, is given a chance. Despite the urgent need to address these alarming issues, these pro-life measures, along with many others including the Medical Care for All Infants protection bill languish in committee, blocked by those who prioritize abortion over the innocent.
