Background:

New Mexico’s Semi-Open Primary system allows more voters to participate in elections, including independent and decline-to-state voters — many of whom are young voters, voters of color, and first-time voters who have historically been excluded from the primary election process. However, many community members remain unaware of how the system works or what their voting rights are. Language barriers, lack of access to information, and confusion around the electoral process continue to impact voter participation in immigrant and historically underrepresented communities.

Through direct outreach, community canvassing, and collective civic engagement actions, Somos Un Pueblo Unido is working to ensure that voters have the tools, information, and confidence needed to participate fully in local democracy.

The organization’s canvassing efforts in Lee, Eddy, and San Juan counties are part of a broader statewide initiative to increase voter participation, strengthen civic engagement, and provide culturally relevant election information directly to communities.
