Defenses dig in, play hard, turn in big plays but…

It’s special to be a football hero, and there were several of them on the College scene Saturday.
Number one, top-ranked Alabama got a big day from quarterback Mac Jones to keep its unblemished record in place, as he passed for 302 yards and a career-high five touchdowns, and it was highlighted by a pair of long touchdown throws to DeVonta Smith on a day where Bama head coach Nick Saban was in quarantine after testing positive for COPID-19 in the 42-13 romp over No. 22 SEC rival Auburn.
Fourth-ranked Clemson got its number one quarterback Trevor Lawrence back from from the injury list and he passed for 403 yards and two touchdown in his first game in five weeks, and likely last home tilt as he appears to be a top choice in the college draft, and he paved the way to a 52-17 shellacking of Pittsburgh in ACC play.
Oklahoma State came away with DezmonJackson career highs of 235 rushing yards and a trio of touchdowns when the 21nd-ranked Cowboys got this big lift from Jackson with two of their best runners sidelined in the tight 50-44 win over Big 12 rival Iowa State.
Unbeaten, 16th-ranked Coastal Carolina got behind running back C.J. Marable when he ran for three touchdowns and picked up 157 yards to help the surprising Chanticleers clinch the top spot in the Sun Belt Conference’s East Division by rolling over Texas State, 49-14.
Appalachian State quarterback Zac Thomas showed the way as he matched his career high of four touchdown passes to go with 279 yards through the air to lead the once-beaten Mountaineers past Troy, 47-10.

Versatile Louisiana-Lafayette quarterback Levi Lewis threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more in less than three quarters when the Ragin’ Cajuns routed winless Louisiana-Monroe, 70-20.

University Texas-San Antonio running back Sincere McCormick carried the ball for a program-record 251 yards that included a pair of touchdowns in the 49-17 victory over North Texas.
For 6th-ranked Florida, quarterback Kyle Trask has put together a program record pf eight-straight touchdown passes, surpassing the mark set by Danny Wuerffel in 1996 and accomplishing it via the 34-10 win over Kentucky.
Miami of Ohio made it to 700 all-time victories after disposing of Akron, 38-7.
