Slow start by the undefeated Pecos girls basketball team turned into a 58-29 blow out

By Arnie Leshin
It was a slow start for the undefeated Pecos girls basketball team Saturday. Then, after the intermission, they took care of business
Cruising along with five-straight wins, they paid a visit to last place District 6-2A rival Texico and let the Wolverines hang around for two quarters, up 11-6 after the opening quarter and 20-14 at halftime. But once the second half began, it became a losing cause for the home side when the Panthers became 6-0 overall (2-0 in district) by going on a 26-9 third quarter run and coasting to a 58-29 rout.
In all, the last two quarters had Pecos outscoring Texico, 38-15, and sending the Wolverines to their fifth loss in six overall starts.
Once again, it was 5-10 senior Trinity Herrera leading the way as a mixture of shooting guard and power forward. The 3-year All-District Herrera tossed in the game-high 24 points and brought down the game-high 10 rebounds. Her sophomore sister, Alexia, added 11 points and five boards. The next stop for the red-hot Panthers is a non-district game at Santa Fe Prep Tuesday.
Up at Taos Saturday in a District 2-3A opener for St. Michael’s, the Lady Horsemen lost 61-35 to drop to 1-2 overall and suffer its initial district loss. The Tigers advanced to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in district.  The Lady Horsemen are home to district leading Robertson Wednesday, and follow that with a non-district contest at 4A Pojoaque Valley on Monday.
At Espanola Valley Saturday in District 2-4A, seniors Jasmine Baca and Miranda Salazar, combined for 29 points in what became a 71-20 blow out of Pojoaque Valley. It  put the Sundevils at 7-1 overall and 4-0 in district, while the Elkettes dropped to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in district. It was 19-9 Espanola after one quarter and increased to 36-14 at halftime. The teams meet against at Pojoaque on April 29th.
