Tips and Tricks – Slow Presentation for Cold Weather
![]() We currently have some very cold weather rolling into New Mexico. For undeterred anglers, it might prove advantageous to slow your presentation down for potentially less-active fish. When fishing with spinners and lures, try slowing down your retrieve and even pausing occasionally. This gives the fish just a little more time to catch up to your lure and strike. When fly-fishing in these colder conditions, I like to use leech-pattern flies and let them rest on the bottom of the body of water I am fishing. It seems like the less-active fish are sometimes patrolling the bottom and subtlety picking feed up as they pass by. I like to use this technique especially in sandy and gravel bank areas where my fly cannot sink into a clump of moss. And, as always, patience and determination are accredited to many an angler’s success!
