Adventure Awaits in New Mexico: Wildlife Department Announces November Events and Outdoor Activities

NEW MEXICO — Cooler weather doesn’t mean the outdoor adventures have to stop! The New Mexico Department of Wildlife has announced a lineup of activities, educational workshops, and special events throughout November and December, offering residents opportunities to explore the outdoors and learn new skills.

From fishing and hunting education to wildlife conservation and outdoor safety, there’s something for just about everyone.

New Mexico Fish Art Contest Returns

Young artists across New Mexico are invited to participate in the second annual New Mexico Fish Art Contest, celebrating the state’s aquatic wildlife through creativity.

This year’s competition accepts both traditional two-dimensional artwork and digital submissions. Participants will compete for prizes including art supplies, fishing equipment, and fishing experiences. Category winners will also advance to the national Art of Conservation competition.

Hunter and Bowhunter Education Classes

The department is also offering several hunter education opportunities throughout New Mexico.

Hunter education classes are scheduled for November 13–14 in Lovington and December 12–13 in Farmington. These courses help participants develop the knowledge and skills necessary for responsible hunting.

A Bowhunter Education class is also scheduled for December 12–13 at the Clovis Wing Shooting Complex, with registration opening November 28.

While bowhunter education certification is not required in New Mexico, many other states require it. The department’s bowhunter education course is free.

Albuquerque Seeks Public Input on Proposed Archery Range

The City of Albuquerque is inviting residents to share their opinions on a proposed regional archery range at Shooting Range Park.

The proposed facility would serve recreational archers, youth programs, and competitive participants.

A public meeting is scheduled for Saturday, November 21, from 10 to 11 AM at the Department of Wildlife’s Northwest Area office, located at 7816 Alamo Road NW in Albuquerque.

For additional information, residents can call 505-768-4956.

Wildlife Officials Remind Residents to Be Bear Aware

Following an increase in human-bear encounters across New Mexico in 2026, wildlife officials are reminding residents to take precautions around their homes and while enjoying outdoor activities.

The department recommends securing garbage, removing outdoor food sources, cleaning grills, and never approaching or feeding bears.

If you encounter a bear, officials advise against running. Instead, make yourself appear larger, speak firmly, and slowly back away.

These simple precautions can help protect both residents and New Mexico’s wildlife.
