On Friday, Nov. 6, Somos Un Pueblo Unido and partner organizations will present preliminary findings to New Mexico Legislature’s Courts, Corrections and Justice Committee on how local law enforcement agencies, county jails, and governments across the state communicate and cooperate with DHS, including the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ICE.
Through public records requests and testimony from community members, Somos has documented cooperation and communication between local agencies and ICE, including the sharing of personal information, jail records, and release dates. In some counties, these practices occur without clear policies or public oversight, raising serious concerns about transparency and accountability.
The findings will help launch a campaign ahead of the 2027 legislative session to secure statewide protections for immigrants and ensuring local public resources, funded by New Mexico taxpayers and immigrant workers, are not used to separate families or support federal immigration enforcement.
Somos and its partners are calling for a uniform statewide policy that strengthens public safety, protects victims and witnesses, and ensures that New Mexicans can travel between communities for work, school, and family without fear. The organizations are also calling for greater transparency about how local resources are used and how local agencies cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
Members of the public and media are invited to attend the hearing. A press conference with state lawmakers and community advocates will follow.
