Will urge FY 2018 funding to support New Mexico’s military bases and U.S. Forest Service for wildfire prevention and response
WASHINGTON — Today at approximately 12:30 p.m. MT / 2:30 p.m. ET, U.S. Senator Tom Udall will highlight the critical role that New Mexico’s military bases play in national security, and urge support for funding and resources for military construction projects at Holloman and Cannon Air Force Bases, and the New Mexico National Guard, during a hearing of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies. Udall will question former White Sands Commanding Officer Lt. Gen. Gwendolyn Bingham about the fiscal year 2018 needs of White Sands Missile Range and military construction projects at New Mexico’s Air Force Bases, including Holloman, which soon will be home to two additional F-16 training squadrons.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, June 7, at approximately 7:30 a.m. MT / 9:30 a.m. ET, Udall will question U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell about massive FY 2018 budget cuts proposed by President Trump during a hearing of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies. With wildfire season under way in New Mexico, Udall also will press Tidwell about the need for adequate funding to help the Forest Service prevent severe wildfires. As the lead Democrat on the Interior and Environment appropriations subcommittee, Udall last month secured an additional $407 million for emergency wildfire suppression in a bipartisan budget agreement to fund the government through September of this year. He will continue to push for strong funding for the next fiscal year, which starts in October, to ensure the Forest Service has the resources it needs to protect communities from wildfires.
